The topic “Marvel Studios Just Teased Patrick Stewart’s Upcoming MCU Return” has two versions, a written version, and a video version below the written version.
Marvel Studios seems to have plans to bring back Patrick Stewart to reprise his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X in the MCU. Please be advised that this article contains spoilers for the mid-credits scene from The Marvels.
In Marvel Studios’ latest theatrical release, The Marvels, the X-Men were brought back into the limelight, while Monica Rambeau found herself in another universe with her mother, Maria Rambeau, who had become the superhero Binary.
The third character in that scene was Kelsey Grammer’s Dr. Hank McCoy, popularly known to X-Men fans as Beast, making his MCU debut while also hinting at the existence of other mutants like him.
The Marvels Post-Credits Scene Teases Patrick Stewart's Upcoming MCU Return
In the mid-credit scene of The Marvels, Monica Rambeau wakes up in a hospital bed next to Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch). However, Maria does not recognize Monica, even though they are mother and daughter in the Earth-616 universe.
Kelsey Grammer’s Beast makes his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he explains to Monica that she is now in a parallel reality to her own after fixing the massive rift in spacetime.
As he leaves, he mentions that Charles Xavier has asked for an update on Monica’s condition, hinting that Charles is an important character in the X-Men’s future in this new reality.
Patrick Stewart appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness but was killed in a rampage by Wanda Maximoff that wiped out Earth-838’s Illuminati.
It appears that The Marvels’ mid-credits scene takes place in another universe, possibly teasing Patrick Stewart’s return as Charles Xavier.
Where Could Patrick Stewart Return in the MCU?
It is highly likely that Patrick Stewart will make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Professor X with the X-Men set to have a bigger presence in the MCU. After playing a Marvel character for 23 years, Stewart hinted at the possibility of returning to the role during the world premiere of Doctor Strange 2. He mentioned that there could be an opportunity for him to play Professor X again.
“Charles Xavier? Yeah. There may be. You know, the whole X-Men comic series is so huge, so vast, there might be an opportunity in which he comes back. We’ll see.”
In February 2023, the actor playing Professor X was informed to stand by for any news on more Marvel appearances. This suggests that Marvel Studios has further plans for his character. The most likely place for a Professor X return would be in 2024’s Deadpool 3, which already has Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine set to appear. There is also a chance that other legacy Marvel actors could be part of that adventure. Marvel is also reportedly planning a massive crossover event called Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. This cinematic event is set to include several fan-favorite mutants from the Fox universe’s catalog.
The Marvels has set the stage for the long-awaited entry of X-Men into the Marvel Studios saga. Regardless of when we receive more updates on Stewart’s potential return, fans can rejoice in the current release of The Marvels in theaters. Additionally, Patrick Stewart’s portrayal of Professor X can be enjoyed on Disney+ in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, along with all his previous X-Men movies.
