Marvel Studios has confirmed the release date for the second season of its Disney+ series, What If…? It has made a historical plan for the premiere. The MCU has been experimenting with several historic releases lately. Even announcing a first-time binge plan for Echo and taking the R-rated show to Hulu on the same day as it comes to Disney+. For the first time ever, the studio dropped two MCU projects on the exact same day. The Marvels held its Thursday night previews at the same time as the Loki Season 2 finale made its way onto Disney+.
What If...? Season 2 Will Release in an Unprecedented Way
Marvel Studios has confirmed the release date for What If…? Season 2, after a long wait of over two years since Season 1. The show will premiere on December 22, 2023, during the holiday season. The release schedule for the nine episodes is rather unique, with the episodes being dropped daily, as opposed to the usual weekly format followed by Disney+.
Initially expected to be released in 2022, Season 2 was removed from the line-up and officially delayed until early 2023. However, it received several more disappointing release updates after that. But now, fans can mark their calendars for the daily release of new episodes until the Season 2 finale on December 30, 2023, which will conclude the nine-episode run.
This holiday season, Marvel’s “What If…?” series will feature a new episode called “What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?” which will air on Christmas Eve.

What If...?'s Unique Release Might Explain Season 2 Delay
Marvel Studios has announced a daily release plan for Season 2 of What If…? which will be like a Disney+ advent calendar for fans. A new MCU story will be released every day around the festive season. One episode of the show will focus on Christmas and may be inspired by Iron Man 3. This could be why What If…? had to push its return a full year from its original late 2022 placement.
Marvel Studios appears to be moving away from its previous weekly release schedule, with What If…? releasing daily and Echo being released for binge-watching. This change in release strategy could be implemented for other projects as well.
It is clear that the anthology format of What If…? is not well-suited for weekly releases unlike a show like Loki, which was able to thrive on the audience’s discussions and speculations during the week between episodes.
Marvel Studios has already confirmed that Season 3 of What If…? is in production and has promised that things will become even “crazier” in the next installment. However, A.C. Bradley, the current head writer, will unfortunately be leaving and will be replaced by a new creative lead.
